In these confusing uncertain times, your creative juices can be suppressed, and it’s difficult to see the solutions to your problems even if they are standing right in front of you.
Why? It is because our minds our gripped by FEAR.
F – Flight, Fight or Freeze syndrome
E – Excuses
A – Anger
R – Resistance
Let me explain.
Flight, Fight, or Freeze
We tend to react in one of three ways:
- We run away from our problems; that is, we busy ourselves with other things
- We take the stance of fighting our way through the problem instead of trying to understand it
- We stick our head in the sand and we pretend the problem doesn’t exist, hoping it will go away
Excuses
Also, when we are fearful, we have all kinds of reasons why things cannot happen. We can’t do this, and we can’t do that. All we can see are the obstacles.
Anger
Unfortunately, we also start to take our frustrations out on the world. We are short-tempered and ill mannered.
Resistant
Finally, we resist making any changes. We seem to have an infinity for the situation that we are in, even though we know it is not good for us.
If you react like this, remember it is quite normal to feel this way but what you cannot do, is stay in this state of mind.
So, what do we do?
We flip the script; that is, do the opposite. For me, the opposite of FEAR is PEACE.
Let me explain.
P – Plan
E – Execute
A – Assess
C – Chose
E – Exhale
Plan
Look at the situation and devise a plan.
- If your rent is too high, share a space
- If your income has dropped, explore other revenue streams
- If you want to do deliveries, partner with a taxi-cab driver
- If you are considering online shopping, get a website
There are things that you can do.
Execute
Once you have a plan execute. Just do it and remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect.
As a small business you have leverage; let your flexibility and responsiveness work for you.
Assess
Evaluate how your plan is working and if it is not going the way you imagined, tweak it.
Choose
Stop reacting and choose your response. Once you are reacting FEAR creeps in and we know what that means. So, choose your response, i.e., plan, execute and assess.
Exhale
Last but not lease Breathe. Take some deep breaths and slow your heart rate down and allow the emotion of Peace to take over.
I guarantee that you will succeed once you take these simple steps when you are facing challenges.
Remember to flip the script!
