The question for 2021 is this: What are you doing with your time? Are you spending some of your time doing the things that are important to you? With the many roles we take on – parent, life-partner, business owner, employee, friend, church member, and the list can go on, it is easy to overlook personal goals about our health, self and professional development, hobbies etc. Also, if we were to audit how we use our time, we might be shocked! Consider in a given week, how much time you spend watching television, sleeping, eating or scanning Facebook, Instagram or other social media platforms.
- How much time during the week do you exercise, eat vegetables or fruits, or drink water etc. to improve your health?
- Have you set aside some time to update your resume, practise your interview skills etc. to land a job?
- Have you done any research or prepared a business plan, so that you can start a business?
- Do you allocate time to read or watch educational videos to improve your knowledge in a given area?
- Lastly, do you spend quality time with loved ones to strengthen your relationships?
Whatever your plans, hopes or dreams the question is, how are you using your time to achieve them? We often have goals, yet we don’t allocate any time for goal achievement, which is wishful thinking.
It’s a new year. Let’s adopt some new rules. Most of us have a smartphone with a calendar that we use to log a dental or doctor’s appointment. This week, I challenge you to set aside some time for goal achievement and put it in your calendar.
For example, if you want to improve your health, set up a meeting from 9 to 10 am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to exercise. If you want to learn more about a topic, schedule an hour on Wednesday mornings to read, watch or do something related to this topic.
Be intentional with your time! Use your calendar each week to schedule appointments to complete activities related to achieving your goals.
